What do you anticipate will be your "suck dragon"? What do you think you can do to avoid this "suck dragon"?
Share an example of what you think this quote is talking about it. It can be a scientific discovery, a piece of art, a work of fiction, a person, etc. Explain in a sentence or two why you chose your example.
Although I disagree with her formal measurement of an introduction paragraph as 4-6 sentences, this is a wonderful lecture on hook strategies. You will find it under "Thinking Thursday" on the TYPHOON WEEKLY PLAN tab. Please be ready to discuss these strategies in class tomorrow, and you should apply one of these strategies to your introduction paragraph tonight to workshop.
Research ways to get over writer's block. Share your favorite tip.
Neptune's Knowledge: Make an infographic or flow chart showing a variety of ways to overcome writer's block. Print a copy and bring to class. John Irving thinks it is a strength for his writing that he has had a simple life. Come to your own conclusion by doing a PRO & a CON statement about the "dangers" of an interesting life on writing.
NEPTUNE'S KNOWLEDGE: If John Irving is right, what advice would you give to writers trapped by their experiences so that they could not escape feeling compelled to write about issues or stories connected to their pasts? Give 2 or 3 specific tips. Take a moment to think about what is your writing style. This will be made up of topics and themes you like to write about, the forms of writing that you favor, your sentence style, word choice, and ultimately when and why you write. For example, my style is playful, but academic, favoring short stories about when reality and the otherworldly collide. I am also fond of long rants on the internet when people make illogical or hurtful claims. My attempts at poetry should be avoided like week expired milk. I never use simple sentences, even when I should, and adore opening dependent clauses, adjectives, and alliteration. My vocabulary is expansive and perhaps my greatest strength. It is too bad that I only write fiction for fun and praise because I believe that a powerful story can change the world. I know the story I should write, but I am too intimidated to write it. NOTE: Your writing style statement does not have to be this long, but I do want you to write something for each part of the definition.
NEPTUNE'S KNOWLEDGE: What is Émile Zola saying about the connection between style and deadlines? This is a wonderful example of word choice. Which words illustrate her idea, and how are those words related? Here It is! DUE Wednesday, Oct. 9th!
